Bug in a Bag

This fun project was created at the Central library branch recently, where kids made bugs and decorated bags. The theme for the summer reading club this year is Catch the Reading Bug. Find out more at hclibrary.org.

Materials

  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Flat marble
  • Google eyes
  • Piece of netting or mesh
  • Sequins
  • Box template Click here to download
  • Markers, crayons or colored pencils
  • Tissue paper
  • Stickers (optional)
  • Foam cut-outs (optional)
  • Stamps and ink (optional)

Instructions

  1. The marble is the body of your bug. Attach google eyes and netting for wings to your bug using glue. Decorate your bug's wings with sequins.
  2. Print the box template, and cut along the exterior. Cut two holes for the handles. Decorate your box using markers, crayons, colored pencils, stickers, cut-outs, stamps and ink or any other creative material.
  3. Once you're finished decorating your box, fold along the dotted lines, and glue the inside flaps to form your box.
  4. Fill your box with tissue paper to form a nest for your bug. Place your bug in its new home!

People Puppets

Make a puppet to look like yourself and puppets to look like all your friends and family, too!

Materials

  • Empty paper towel tube
  • Jumbo craft stick
  • Scissors
  • Tacky glue
  • Paint and brush
  • Markers
  • Wiggle eyes
  • Ribbon bows (optional)

Instructions

  1. Glue a jumbo craft stick inside the empty tube to form a handle.
  2. To make hair, cut strips down one side of the tube to desired length. Bend or curl the pieces around a fat marker.
  3. Paint the face and hair.
  4. Glue on wiggle eyes.
  5. Draw on details with marker.
  6. Glue on hair bows, if desired.

Egg Carton Crab

Here is a fun recycling project you can make from egg carton sections.

  • "A House for Hermit Crab" by Eric Carle
  • "Clumsy Crab" by Ruth Galloway
  • "Is this a House ... For Hermit Crab?" by Megan Mcdonald and S. D. Schindler

Materials

  • Empty egg carton
  • Red or blue paint and brush
  • Red or blue pipe cleaners
  • Wiggle eyes
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Glue

Instructions

  1. Cut three sections out of the egg carton. One section will be the crab's body. Cut down two other sections to 1/2 inch high. Cut a "V" shape out of each one to make the claws.
  2. Punch four holes in both sides of the body.
  3. Paint all three pieces red or blue. Let dry.
  4. Cut four red pipe cleaners in half. Push one piece in each punched hole. Bend to form legs and claws using photo as a guide.
  5. Punch a hole in each claw and add to the front pipe cleaners.
  6. Glue on wiggle eyes.
