Tissue Paper Ornaments

Decorate your Christmas tree with these fun, home-made ornaments.

Materials

  • Styrofoam balls
  • Tissue paper in assorted colors
  • Liquid starch
  • Glitter
  • Hairpins
  • Toothpicks
  • Wax paper
  • Decoupage solution
  • Foam brush
  • Hair pin

Instructions

  1. Tear tissue paper into irregular 1-inch pieces.
  2. Working over waxed paper, brush a section of the Styrofoam ball with liquid starch.
  3. Use toothpicks pushed into the Styrofoam to keep the ball from rolling around.
  4. Place overlapping pieces of tissue paper over the starched section of the ball. Brush a coat of starch over tissue paper. Continue until entire ball is covered.
  5. Let dry. Brush with a coat of decoupage solution. Sprinkle with glitter while still wet. Let dry.
  6. Remove toothpicks. Push a hair pin into the ball for a hanger.

Jewish Box

Make a Tzedakah Box to remember the needy during the holiday season.

Materials

  • Empty, clean container (a nut container works well)
  • Silver paint
  • Foam brush
  • Sequins
  • Tacky glue
  • Toothpick
  • Shiny blue wrapping paper
  • Craft knife (kids, have an adult help you with these!)
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Remove lid and label from container. Paint it with silver paint. Let dry.
  2. Use dabs of tacky glue to attach blue sequins in rows along the top and bottom.
  3. Cut two Stars of David out of blue wrapping paper, and glue them on each side of the box.
  4. Ask an adult to use a craft knife and cut a slit in the top for your spare change to donate to the needy.

Kwanzaa Placemat

Weave a mat using the colors of Kwanzaa to use this holiday season.

Materials

  • 12 inch by 18 inch piece of yellow craft foam
  • 9 inch by 12 inch craft foam pieces in red, black and green
  • Tacky glue or glue dots
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Mark off 1 inch from both ends of the yellow craft foam sheet, and cut a lengthwise slit every inch being careful to end slits at the 1 inch mark.
  2. Cut black, red and green foam stock into 1 inch by 12 inch strips. Weave strips in through the slits alternating each row.
  3. Secure ends with glue or glue dots.
